Words from Melissa Cole, MT-BC, WMTR
“WCMT has always had a strong presence in leading music therapy in Wisconsin in public relations and advocacy for music therapy and providing its members with continuing education, resources and a way to connect and collaborate. I enjoyed my time serving WCMT as webmaster while helping to build a new website which included creating a new look and introducing the concept of personal profiles for members. In 2003 I completed the course work for music therapy at UW-Oshkosh and in 2004 finished my internship at Bartels Lutheran Homes in Waverly, IA and shortly after started my career as a MT-BC. I’ve worked with all ages and populations, but most often with elders both with and without dementia. I’ve worked at one of my current jobs, Oakwood Lutheran Retirement Homes, for 11.5 years. Some of my favorite jobs have included the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the Jewish Homes Bader Center, both in Milwaukee, and very currently the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Janesville. In recent years a family member was diagnosed with autism, and I’ve been very involved in providing support through a lot of different types of therapies. Those experience will be invaluable as a colleague and I will be presenting at the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin conference in Wisconsin Dells at the start of May 2020, with our presentation titled, “Working in Unison: Communication and Collaboration is Key to Growth”. It will focus on the importance of collaboration between parents, music therapists, ABA therapists, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and more. I am almost 40% done with getting my Masters of Music Therapy degree from Alverno College, and I am growing and learning constantly in this mostly online format. It truly is reigniting my passion for music therapy!”
The Wisconsin Chapter for Music Therapy is proud to award the 2020 Music Therapist of the Year award to Melissa Cole, MT-BC, WMTR. Congratulations Melissa!
