We are celebrating Music Therapy in Wisconsin!

This spring marks two big anniversaries for music therapy in Wisconsin.  The Wisconsin Chapter for Music Therapy celebrated 45 years as an organized chapter on April 28, 2018.  Also in the fall of 2018 Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wi will celebrate 70 years of music therapy education and training.  Alverno’s music therapy program is the third oldest in the country.  Congratulations!

March 2018: Music Therapy Month in Wisconsin

Governor Scott Walker proclaimed March 2018 as Music Therapy Month in Wisconsin.  The wonderful music therapy work that is done all year long year long was recognized.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. As an established healthcare profession, music therapy uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

  • promote wellness
  • manage stress
  • alleviate pain
  • express feelings
  • enhance memory
  • improve communication
  • promote physical rehabilitation

More than 170 board-certified music therapists provide services at a variety of settings statewide.  Wisconsin is also home to Carroll University and Alverno College, both of which have accredited music therapy degree programs and are well-established pillars of their respective communities.
